What is Tog? How Does it Compare to Fill Power?

When it comes to searching for the perfect duvet or comforter, it’s important to pay attention to certain features that allow you to dictate how well that particular blanket will work for you and your body. Find out what tog and fill power really mean and which ratings are appropriate for you and your needs. 

What is Tog?

Tog stands for thermal overall grade and simply provides a more specific measure of how much heat a duvet will trap. This is calculated by how well the duvet can keep the heat in, otherwise known as insulation. To find your perfect tog rating, you would look at the tog scale which ranges from 1-15. The lower the number, the cooler the duvet will be, and the higher the number, the warmer. So, if you prefer a much warmer feel, especially in the cooler months, you would aim for a higher tog. However, there are also all-season duvets which provide an adequate balance of warmth and coolness for year round use. What is Fill Power?

Another important quality when looking for the right duvet is fill power. Fill power determines how filled the duvet is. In other words, is your duvet very fluffy or perhaps not as lofty? Unlike tog, fill power is measured based on how many cubic inches are taken up. Normally, you would see fill power ranging between 450 to 900. In this case, you would aim for fill power that is around 600 for the perfect loftiness. This allows enough fluff for comfort, warmth and breathability.
