How to Wash Pillows

While tossing your pillowcase in the wash every now and then has become second nature, giving your pillow a good cleanse may not be the first thing on your mind. However, it’s just as important to keep your inserts clean as you are laying your head on it every night. Since it is concealed by protectors and pillowcases, it does not require the same level of care, that being said, it should become part of your hygiene routine as well. Take a look at how to properly care for your pillows.

How Often Should You Wash Your Pillow?

Because you are not directly laying on your pillow and typically use a cover or case of some sort, you do not need to wash your pillows as often. We recommend washing it every 4-6 months for a thorough cleanse. Additionally, keep your pillowcases clean and wash them weekly to prevent any dirt, grease, or other unwanted buildup that can cause irritation.

Consider the Wash Cycle & Temperature

Always use warm or cold water and a gentle cycle when washing your pillows to avoid damage to the fill. You can also choose to dry clean your pillows if you prefer for a careful clean. It’s recommended to use a front load washer as opposed to a top loader to avoid damage from the agitator. Avoid using fabric softeners, dryer sheets, harsh liquid, or powdered detergents as well as excess detergent of any kind as these can all harm the feathering and shell reducing the durability of your pillow.

Removing Stains

Do not let any stains set in by drying or prolonging the treatment process. Immediately rinse the stain with cold water to remove as much as possible. Saturate the stain area with 1 to 2 teaspoons (depending on the stain's size) of a mild, liquid, and biodegradable detergent. Rub it into the stain, let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse with cold water. If the stain disappears, wash your linens as usual. Take a look at our in-depth stain removal guide for even more details.

Dry Carefully

Dry fully in the dryer on low with wool dryer balls or tennis balls to properly fluff and redistribute down. Alternatively you may hang to dry, but ensure the pillow is fully dry before inserting in your pillowcase. Shake to fluff your pillow when it comes out of the dryer for a fluffy, plush feel.

The Best Long-Lasting Pillows

Choose high quality pillows for high durability and avoid replacing your pillows so often. Pillows filled with European white goose down or premium down alternative will last many years if care for properly and stored correctly when not in use. Keep your inserts and linens stored in a cool, dry area and cover for protection against discoloration, mold and mildew buildup.
