Silk is a delicate fabric so it must be cared for delicately and with additional care to maintain its silkiness and sheen. In order to preserve its natural fibers, follow these tips when washing, drying, ironing, and storing. 

Washing

It’s advised to wash silk bedding every 1–2 weeks in order to maintain hygiene while preserving its natural fibers. Pre-treat any stains by checking for stains and spot-clean with a mild detergent designed for silk. Avoid scrubbing and gently blot with a damp cloth. When it’s time to toss in the wash, use a delicate cycle with cold water. Use a silk-specific detergent or one labeled for delicates. Avoid bleach and fabric softeners. You can also choose to hand wash your silk by filling a basin with lukewarm water and a small amount of silk detergent and gently agitate the bedding for 3–5 minutes. Avoid wringing or twisting.

Drying

If you choose to hang dry your silk, lay the bedding flat on a clean towel and roll to remove excess water. Hang it indoors away from direct sunlight or heat sources, as these can weaken fibers and fade colors. While tumble drying can damage silk, if you must use the dryer, always use the low heat setting and remove while still damp for less risk of damage and deterioration. 

Ironing

Always use the lowest setting or a silk-specific setting on your iron. Iron while the fabric is slightly damp to remove wrinkles more easily. Use a pressing cloth or iron on the reverse side to prevent direct heat contact and protect the fabric.

Storing

Store silk bedding, and all other bedding, in a breathable cotton bag or pillowcase to avoid trapping moisture in a cool, dry environment. Avoid storing in plastic bags as these can cause yellowing over time due to lack of airflow. Use cedar balls or lavender sachets to repel moths without harsh chemicals.
