Let’s face it - we all want our soft, fluffy blankets to stay exactly as they are no matter how many times we wash or use them. However, it’s pretty common that we lose that luscious hand feel and end up with pilled, rough, not so cozy blankets after a few years. Luckily, there are a few care tips that we recommend to extend the longevity of the softness so you can continue to enjoy those velvety soft layers. 

Wash with Care

Always wash your linens on a gentle cycle with mild detergent and cold or warm water. This is especially true with delicate pieces that you want to preserve and reduce the chance of shrinkage or damage. Washing in hot water or using harsh detergents can weaken the fibers and cause them to deteriorate faster. 

Avoid Harsh Chemicals

Avoid fabric softeners, bleach and other harmful chemicals that may be too harsh for your blankets. Because of the delicate nature of the velvety soft feel, these additional chemicals can harm the fibers as they are too powerful and destructive. Always use mild detergent and keep it to a minimum, if possible. 

Dry Properly

Dry on low or air dry and avoid high heat at all costs. The dryer possesses a large amount of heat in order to properly dry your linens. So, choosing a high heat setting can dry out the fibers even more so and leave them brittle and rough. Always use a low heat setting or, if possible, hang to dry to prevent the risk of damage.

Practice Regular Maintenance

Every now and then, shake and fluff your blankets to help redistribute the fibers and prevent clumping. You can also use a fabric brush to restore the softness. Try to fluff out your blanket every week or so to keep the fluff alive and even. 

Store Properly 

When your blankets are not in use, be sure to store them in a cool, dry place where they can breathe to avoid compression and potential stiffness. Moisture can lead to mold, mildew and unwanted damage so keep them dry and covered without eliminating all airflow. Try to rotate usage and switch out your blankets every now and then to preserve their durability and softness.
