Choosing your bed sheets comes down to personal preference including comfort, style and durability. However, it’s important not to ignore the make of the sheets, especially the thread count and fabric, as this determines breathability and durability. That being said, the thread count number is not necessarily what is important to consider. Take a look at what you should focus on and what you should omit when it comes to thread count.
Is a High Thread Count Better?
While many claim that the higher the thread count, the better quality the sheets, this is actually not the case at all. We recommend choosing your sheets based on the fabric material and weave. The reality, according to textile experts, is that this perception has been largely shaped by marketing tactics rather than genuine quality improvements. Pat Slaven, a textile expert at Consumer Reports, points out, “You may see sheets advertised with thread counts of 1,000 or more, but physically, it's not possible to fit that many threads into a square inch.” In fact, the maximum number of threads that can comfortably fit into a square inch is around 800. So how do some companies market sheets with thread counts as high as 1,000, 1,500, or even 1,800? The answer lies in how the fabric is constructed, and the process begins with how cotton fibers are spun into threads.
What Determines Quality Sheets?
High quality sheets are made with high quality threads. Egyptian cotton is derived from the cotton plant that is grown in Egypt along the Nile River Valley. The conditions and hand-picking process results in extra soft, durable, and long-staple fibers which produces a luxuriously soft, extremely durable fabric. These fibers withstand many washes and uses which lasts for many years. Different thread counts can result in different hand feels, however keep in mind that extremely high thread counts are not equivalent to high quality sheets.
